Cover of the pressbook for Peter Lorre’s first and only directing job (and return to German cinema) , Der Verlorene. The film was also based on a novel Lorre himself wrote. After the movie bombed in West Germany, Lorre was despondent and thereafter strictly did movies for the paycheck.

The Naked and the Dead
I like how Aldo Ray breaks the fourth wall after downing a beer: “You remember the book, now here’s the picture.”
The movie’s not as good as the book (and I like the book and Mailer a lot), but there’s a lot going for the movie too: Raoul Walsh, Bernard Herrmann, Aldo Ray, L.Q. Jones. Raymond Massey, Lili St. Cyr.
